Powerful taiko drumming, classical Indian music, and a contemporary take on tap are just some of the shows in the Chan Centre’s 2024/25 programming.

The venue has announced its first wave of shows for the upcoming season, with three different streams curated by the centre’s director Pat Carrabré, curator-in-residence Jarrett Martineau, and guest curators David Fung and Dinuk Wijeratne.

“This season offers a kaleidoscopic spectrum of sounds,” says Martineau in a release. “I am excited to welcome the return of renowned artists…and to present the premiere of new projects.”

Among the highlights, Inuk musician Elisapie kicks off the season with the West Coast premiere of her multimedia concert Uvattini (“home” in Inuktitut), presented in collaboration with the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet are set to return to the Chan Centre for the first time since playing a sold-out show in 2013. The 50-year-old string quartet has released 1,100 commissioned works and 70 albums, working with everyone from Nine Inch Nails to Tanya Tagaq.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and harpist Brandee Younger will lead the Canadian premiere of Translinear Light: The Music of Alice Coltrane, a celebration of the musician’s spiritual jazz.

The YAMATO Drummers of Japan will bring taiko drumming to the stage, while rudra veena virtuoso Bahuddin Dagar will showcase dhrupad—India’s oldest surviving classical music genre.

“It is a thrill to put my programming hat back on, reminding me of my former life as a radio host,” Carrabré adds in a press release. “It is so rewarding to be able to say yes to projects that have made me pause and reflect on my own conceptions of music-making. I also think these concerts will resonate with audiences and inspire with their virtuosity and daring creativity.”

Season tickets go on sale on June 12, and single tickets are available from June 25. You can check out the full list of the Chan Centre’s upcoming concerts here. The rest of the season will be announced soon.
