The Dance Centre announces lively 2023/2024 season
The Dance Centre has been an integral part of the BC dance community since 1986, offering dance classes as well as public events and support for choreographic research and dancers in residency. Many projects and partnerships will be coming to fruition during the 2023/2024 season, along with a diverse lineup of events and series.
There’s the Global Dance Connections series, which runs from November to May and features everything from hip-hop dance to theatrical presentations of healing and revolution:
Stand Up Dance: Anatomalia: anatomy + anomaly + femalia
November 16-18 at 8pm
Created by queer Canadian artist Meagan O’Shea, it features five dancers portraying the release of trauma stored in the body and the reclamation of joy.
Ebnflōh: La Probabilité du Néant
December 7-9 at 8pm
This hip-hop piece explores the fine line between spectator and accomplice when witnessing extreme situations.
Tangaj Collective: Ramanenjana
January 19-20 at 8pm and January 21 at 2pm
Taking us back to the political landscape of Madagascar in 1863, this docufiction performance talks of colonialism and the role of dance in society.
Arno Schuitemaker: If You Could See Me Now
March 14-16 at 8pm
Club dance is turned on its head in this exploration of rhythm, endurance, light, and music.
Danny Nielsen: The New Standards
May 23-25 at 8pm
Combining jazz piano and tap dance, this show is a collaboration with musician Dan Reynolds.
This season also boasts a variety of events featuring Canadian and international choreographers, as well as the return of the popular Discover Dance! Series.
Classical Indian Dances in Focus
September 28 at 12pm
Featuring two contrasting styles of Indian dance known for their storytelling.
Calle Verde + Jhoely Triana Flamenco
November 9 at 12pm
A celebration of flamenco’s traditions, as well as the ways that dancers are pushing this style forward.
Voirelia Dance Hub
February 29 at 12pm
De/Formed Revival depicts Renaissance sculpture and explores the idea of breaking free from the past.
Aché Brasil
March 28 at 12pm
Afro-Brazilian dances and music, accompanied by acrobatics and self-defense tactics.
Dance//Novella
April 25 at 12pm
A special selection of works from the repertoire of Dance//Novella: a company founded by former Ballet BC artists Racheal Prince and Brandon Lee Alley.
Scotiabank Dance Centre Open House
September 16, all day
The annual open house will feature the work of Isaac Gasangwa, a Rwandan educator and ambassador of African cultures that goes by Izo Dreamchaser. It is also an opportunity to experience a variety of dance styles through free classes and workshops.
International Dance Day
April 29
The details for International Dance Day are still to be announced, but as usual, we’ve been promised various locations full of free events that celebrate the diversity of dance across Vancouver.
