Beer Buzz: Sorry Yeast Vancouverites, but Coors Organic is anything but watery and domestic

As a valuable public service, we taste the latest in Lower Mainland beers and then give you a highly opinionated, pocket-sized review.

      On Tap: Coors Organic

Their Words: “We spend a lot of time doing a lot of things, but imagine what we could do if we spent more times on just a few simple things! True expertise is shown in simplicity, and everything we do has been kept simple. So enjoy a simple sip with Coors Organic. We’ve taken minimal ingredients and made them as refreshing as the mountains. With 90 calories, 4g of carbs, and a fresh clean taste.”

Taste test: You don’t need to be a member of the Yeast Vancouver brewing society to guess what Coors Organic isn’t. If you’re looking for something that’s going to make you forget about a Double-Chocolated Milk Stout or Wild Huckleberry Hazy Wheat IPA you’re in the wrong section of the beer store. But sometimes there’s nothing wrong with keeping things simple. As advertised, Coors Organic is indeed a straight-ahead and entirely unfussy beer made with nothing but non-GMO hops, barley and water. Colour-wise it’s as golden as a ’70s sunset in California, while on the taste front expect pleasant grains and cereal notes with none of the sweetness found in many mass-produced lagers. The best thing? Despite its 3.8 ABV, it doesn’t seem like a light beer. Summer's almost gone. Coors organic is a nice and refreshingly unpretentious way to sit back and enjoy what’s left of it.

Taste Test: American beer often gets something of a bad rap. Hell, indie-rock pioneers Pavement once backhandedly mocked the entire U.S. big-brewery industry by releasing an EP titled Watery, Domestic. But you know what? From the wide opens plains of Texas to the trailer parks of Tacoma, America can also be kind of exotic. More so than ever now that it's a land  none of us can go to, with that not changing soon. As any Blue Velvet fan knows, a cold Heineken is no substitute for an ice-cold brain-numbing Pabst Blue Ribbon, especially when "In Dreams" is on the jukebox. And really is there anything more fucking adorable than a six pack of Miller High Life ponies? So if you’re looking for someone to dump on Coors Organic for not being craft enough, you’ve come to the wrong end of the bar.
