What’s not to love about a sandwich? Meat and veggies and cheese with savoury sauces between what may be the perfect food item: bread. Here are a few of our favourite sandos in the city.

      La Grotta Del Formaggio

A Commercial Drive mainstay and popular grocer and deli, La Grotta Del Formaggio has been part of Vancouver’s Little Italy since the 1970s. Known for its focaccia panini, La Grotta offers up classic Italian combos, including the Il Classico, a mortadella spicy capicollo and provolone cheese sammie, and a veggie-loaded Napoletano with bocconcini fresh mozza cheese and tomatoes. Not sure what you’re craving? They also offer a build-your-own option.

      Say Hey Cafe & Deli

For an Instagrammable crosssection sandwich made with local ingredients, head to Say Hey Cafe and Deli in Chinatown. The team at Say Hey likes to have fun with the menu, which includes meat-based sandwiches under the “superheroes” category, and veggies under “anti-heroes.” Plus, there is always a rotating menu of limited-edition offerings, including collaborations done with BC spot prawns and Thank You Pizza

      Vennie’s Sub Shop

Whether you like it hot or cold, Vennie’s Sub Shop has you covered. The offerings will transport you to a New York bodega, just like the ones Jennifer Lopez claims to have frequented. A must-try is the New York-style chopped cheese stuffed with smoked beef, queso, mozzarella, and caramelized onions. Get your napkins ready; this is sure to be a messy one.

      Ba Le Sandwich Shop

You know a Vietnamese sub shop is legit when it smells like baguettes from the moment you step foot inside. There are four locations across the Lower Mainland, which means you’ll never have to travel too far to get a banh mi from Ba Le. With a dozen flavour combos, including vegan steak, chicken, and bologna, there is something for everyone.

      Finch’s Tea House

Inspired by cafes in Paris, Finch’s Tea House is known for its homemade charm, authentically vintage decor, and delicious bites. On the menu are sandos on baguettes with fresh, local ingredients, including unique combinations such as pear with prosciutto and brie with grapes. Have a sweet tooth? They also serve ice cream sandwiches (that counts, right?).
