Japanese retailer MUJI to open first Canadian pop-up store in Vancouver

MUJI is finally making its way to Vancouver—as a pop-up shop, at least.

Popular for its streamlined home, fashion, and stationery goods that forgo branding and excess packaging, the Japanese retailer has announced on its Canadian Facebook page that it will be participating in Japan Unlayered, a free exhibition showcasing contemporary Japanese architecture, design, and culture at the Fairmont Pacific Rim (1038 Canada Place) from January 27 to February 28, 2017.

Decked out in Canadian oak, the pop-up space will be designed by renowned Japanese architect and one of the exhibit's curators, Kengo Kuma.

It will highlight MUJI's pared-down aesthetic and carry some of the brand's bestselling items, including its ultrasonic diffusers, essential oils, and wall-mounted CD players, in limited quantities. (Hello, ridiculously smooth ballpoint pens, minimalist storage containers, and houskeeping tools that—dare we say—actually look kind of chic!)

Works from Kengo Kuma, Michelin star chef Hiromitsu Nozaki, and leading streetstyle boutique BEAMS Japan, plus kimonos and a special Japanese tea experience, will also be presented at Japan Unlayered.

A representative from MUJI Canada confirms to the Straight by email that the company has plans to open a permanent store in Vancouver in the New Year.

MUJI currently operates three Canadian stores in Toronto.
