You Nearly Missed: “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Beetlejuice” at the Rio

      It’s Halloweek! Let’s get campy.

Going to see a cult-classic film at the Rio Theatre is one of the most Vancouver things you can do with your time. Especially during spooky season, when iconic movies Rocky Horror Picture Show and Beetlejuice are on the bill.

If you don’t think “rock movie musical” is a genre, think again. King of camp Rocky Horror Picture Show is a raucous, hilarious, fun, and deeply bizarre tale of a young couple who get a flat tire and find themselves at the home of the wonderfully weird Dr. Frank-N-Furter. At the Rio, showings are being hosted by Geekenders founder Fairlith Harvey, who will guide audiences through various elements of participation. Costumes are highly encouraged (you’ll stand out more if you’re not in one).

      Literally what?

Then there’s Beetlejuice, which features a truly impeccable cast including Alec Baldwin, Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, and Canadian national treasure Catherine O’Hara. The story follows a dead couple who haunt their old country house and try to scare away the new (alive) family who moves in—with the help of the mischievous Beetlejuice. It’s a Tim Burton creation, so you know it will be juicily wacky.
