Wanted Canada-wide: $55,000 reward for convicted killer who escaped from Lower Mainland prison
A national manhunt and a major reward has been launched for a convicted murderer who escaped from a Fraser Valley correctional facility in 2018 and who is wanted for being unlawfully at large.
Around 10 p.m. on August 7, 2018, a headcount at the minimum-security unit at the Correctional Service of Canada in Mission, B.C., revealed that inmate John Norman MacKenzie was missing.
Despite efforts to locate him, including previous news releases from Mission RCMP, he has not been found and Mission RCMP believe he may have left Canada.
He had been serving a life sentence for numerous convictions, including second-degree murder and armed robbery. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for him in November.
He was last seen in Mission around 7 p.m. on August 7. At the time, he was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt.
MacKenzie is described as a 60-year-old white male who is 175 centimetres (five-feet, nine-inches) tall and his last-known weight is 89 kilograms (196 pounds).
He has blue eyes and his last-known hair colour was greying brown. He also had a greying brown goatee, and has a scar on the side of his right eye.
His birthdate is December 6, 1960, and he doesn’t have any ties to the community of Mission.
According to Mission RCMP, he is extremely intelligent and computer savvy. He has been known to carry fake identification documents, including driver’s licenses and passports.
Anyone who offers him assistance in evading apprehension could be considered an accessory after the fact and could face charges.
As this suspect could be armed and dangerous, citizens are warned not to apprehend him themselves but to instead report any information to 911 or Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The Bolo Program, a national awareness campaign for Canada's most-wanted individuals, announced on January 8 that it is offering a reward of up to $50,000—with an additional $5,000 from Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers—for any information that leads to MacKenzie's arrest. The reward is available until July 8.
