Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky compares Russian attack to Nazi Germany's invasion in Second World War
Russian president Vladimir Putin has unleashed the largest military operation in Europe since the Second World War.
That's prompted Ukraine's democratically elected president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to compare the Russian invasion to that of Nazi Germany.
Hitler's army invaded Ukraine in June of 1941. The Nazis installed a ruthless administrator, Erich Koch, and began mass killing of Jews.
During the Nazi occupation, about 2.2 million people were taken from Ukraine to work as slave labourers in Germany.
Zelensky said on Twitter that Russia "has embarked on a path of evil", but his country is defending itself and "won't give up its freedom, no matter what Moscow thinks".
