Yes, this play is about a guy named Danny.

No, this play is not about scuba diving, or spelunking, or whaling, or shipwrecks. It doesn’t involve pirates, hidden treasure, deep sea anglerfish, or giant squid.

Contrary to what the title might otherwise imply, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is actually about two landlocked strangers, Danny and Roberta, who meet at a bar in The Bronx and set off on an inward journey of discovery, secrets, and desires. This play might not actually take place underwater, but it promises to delve into the depths of the human soul.

And it’s coming to a Vancouver stage next week for the first time in half a decade.

The two-person show, presented by Blue i Radio, features Rebecca Brotherhood as Roberta and Hellal Jawhari as Danny. Originally presented at New York’s Circle in the Square Theatre back in 1984, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea has been a recurring staple of the stage ever since.

Vancouver’s edition is kicking off what will likely be a reinvigorated spotlight on the play, as an off-Broadway production starring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott is scheduled for a run in New York starting at the end of October.

Those hoping to check out the Vancouver production can head to The NEST Theatre on Granville Island for a 6:30pm show on September 26, September 27, or September 29—or catch a matinee at 3:30pm on September 30 and October 1.

      Tickets start at $20.50.
