Minimalist Japanese retailer Muji has confirmed that its first Western Canadian location will open at Burnaby’s Metropolis at Metrotown this summer.

Measuring 7,700 square feet, the new store will be Muji’s largest location in Canada yet, eclipsing the size of the brand’s three Toronto-area shops. A second Muji store, clocking in at a whopping 10,000 square feet, is expected to open on Robson Street before the end of the year.

“They will be much bigger than the stores in Toronto,” Toru Akita, president of Muji Canada, told the Straight during an interview at Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim earlier this year. “We will also provide some new products and services which we have not yet brought to Canada.”

Its name short for the Japanese words for “no-brand quality goods”, Muji produces pared-down home, fashion, and stationery items that forgo excess packaging and branding. It’s developed a cult following since its founding in the ’80s, expanding to Canada in 2014.

The Muji opening in Burnaby follows a successful month-long pop-up held at the Fairmont Pacific Rim earlier this year. Anticipation for the temporary shop was so high that a reservation system was put in place to ensure the comfort of shoppers.

Muji’s place at Metrotown has not yet been confirmed, though “coming soon” signs should be up any day now. The shopping mall is becoming a bit of a destination for Japanese-retail lovers, with Uniqlo announcing in April that it will open its first Western Canadian location at the centre as well.
