In addition to snacking on Santa-shaped chocolates, attending the upcoming Vancouver Bach and Children’s Choirs performance is another exciting way to embrace the festive season.

The Vancouver Bach Family of Choirs will be performing Benjamin Britten’s St. Nicolas Cantata at the Orpheum on November 30 at 7:30 p.m. The genuine and heartfelt piece is aimed at connecting with young people, making it a special experience for parents to share with their children. Though the highly renowned Vancouver Bach Choir has been entertaining music enthusiasts for 91 years, this is the very first time it will perform this joyful piece. The dramatic cantata, written in 1948, tells the story of St. Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus, exploring his enduring legacy that lives on today.

The composition was one of Benjamin Britten’ most inventive works, depicting the patron saint of children, scholars, seamen, and travellers. Britten’s adoration and appreciation of St. Nicholas’s courage, kindness, and gentle demeanour will be heard throughout the choral performance.

St. Nicolas Cantata was originally scored for four separate schools with a piano duet, strings, percussion, a tenor soloist, and organ. This makes it the perfect piece for the Vancouver-based multigenerational choir.

Merry attendees can expect to be blown away by tenor soloist Asitha Tennekoon. The Sri Lankan-born tenor has quickly established himself as one of Canada’s most impressive and versatile singing artists. Talented pianists Stephen Smith and Kin Ming Wong will lead the singers through delightful vocal solos and bright melodies.

Those unable to attend the concert in-person can watch the performance from the comfort of their home by purchasing virtual access to the concert for $15. All ticket holders to the show at the Orpheum will also receive access to a video recording of the concert that will be sent by email by December 21.
