The public has responded generously to a fundraising appeal to help the family of a popular emergency room nurse at Peace Arch Hospital.

Paul Bennett, 47, was gunned down in the driveway of his Surrey home on the afternoon of June 23.

Through a GoFundMe page, friends of Bennett have raised more than $16,000 in a single day toward their goal of $50,000.

On the page, a friend describes Bennett as "a wonderful man, father, husband and family guy", as well as a hockey coach who volunteered his time to help kids.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has released few details about Bennett's murder apart saying that police believe it was "targeted".
