Man sent to hospital after shooting in Oppenheimer Park in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside

      A large number of police sealed off Oppenheimer Park in the early evening after a shooting incident.

      According to the Vancouver Police Department, one man was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

      He was found just after 5:30 p.m. with a gunshot wound.

      NPA councillor Melissa De Genova tweeted that the shooting could have been prevented if park commissioners had gone along with calls from the two NPA members, Trisha Barker and John Coupar, to obtain an injunction.

      Earlier this week, the park board authorized general manager Malcolm Bromley to seek an injunction to remove occupants of the long-running tent city in Oppenheimer Park.

      This can only occur after various conditions are met, including engaging a third party to conduct an independent assessment.

      “While we know this will take time, I am optimistic that we have developed a plan to improve conditions for people experiencing homelessness in Oppenheimer Park and to move toward a safe resolution to the current encampment in the park,” park board chair Stuart Mackinnon said in a news release earlier in the week.
