COVID-19: City of Vancouver hiring 1,500 for the fall municipal election—but no antivaxxers need apply

The City of Vancouver has announced that it will be hiring more than 1,500 people to work as election officials during the 2022 fall municipal election.

Those officials will assist voters across the city not only on the date of the election, October 15 (a Saturday), but also on advance voting days that will take place between October 1 and 13.

But if you're an antivaxxer or refuse to wear a mask, regardless of what B.C.'s public health officer has mandated or which public precautions have been removed, don't bother applying: masks will have to be worn while at work during election day and advance voting days, and proof of vaccination will have to be provided.

The news came via a May 11 city bulletin in which the city described the positions it is seeking to fill as presiding election officials, alternate presiding election officials, registration clerks, and voting coordinators.

On a city "employment opportunities" webpage, the following requirements are listed for those wishing to apply for any of the positions: you must be at least 16 years of age; you must have proof of vaccination against COVID-19; you must be legally able to work in B.C.; you must wear a mask while working; you must work on the actual, official election day; and you must attend mandatory training sessions.

Applications will be received for both presiding election officials and alternate presiding election officials positions until June 17.

For the remaining positions, registration clerks and voting coordinators, applications will be accepted until July 15 and July 29, respectively.

The mandatory training will occur in September (no dates announced yet). The work hours for advance voting days (optional) and election day (mandatory work day) itself will be from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

No information about wages is provided in either the bulletin or on the webpage. Go here for further information and/or to apply.
