Sometimes you gotta laugh through the pain.

A Vancouver-based comedic web series about the housing crisis has garnered award nominations and US streamer attention.

The Eviction, a locally-produced web series by Julie Bruns, has been nominated for Best Web Series and Best Performance at the Leos—Western Canada’s premiere film awards.

The seven-episode comedy series explores Vancouver’s impossibly unaffordable housing market, inspired by many true experiences of renovictions, apartament sales, illegal rent increases, and general rising rental prices in Vancouver.

The Eviction follows East Vancouver couple Anne (Julie Bruns) and Phoebe (Chelsey Moore), who discover an eviction notice taped to the door of their apartment. As potential buyers start viewing their home, they come up with a chaotic scheme: what if they can make their apartment seem unbuyable?

The series was shot just off Commercial Drive, with a cast and crew made up of BC locals—many of whom were understandably excited to work on a project that they could relate to so much.

The winners of the Leo Awards will be announced on July 7 during the ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. The series is also being picked up by US streamer Reel Women’s Network for release in July. In the meantime, The Eviction is available to watch in Canada on YouTube, where it has already garnered almost 100,000 views.
