A potentially explosive situation was successfully defused last night after an unexpected discovery in East Vancouver.

Around 2 p.m. on April 4, Vancouver police were called to an apartment building on East 37th Avenue near Victoria Drive.

While cleaning out the storage locker of a dead family member, someone discovered a box of old ammunitions and explosives.

The VPD had their Explosive Disposal Unit handle the situation due to the age and condition of suspected dynamite.

While the items were transported to a nearby park to be neutralized, vehicle and pedestrian traffic was restricted from East 36th Avenue to East 41st Avenue on Victoria Drive around 10 p.m. onward. The VPD stated that area residents were not at risk.

At 12:19 a.m. today (April 5), the VPD announced that the explosives were safely neutralized and that there was no risk to the public.
